TRAFFIC RULES IN NEW YORK

Whether you're from New York or visiting from out of state for Go Bowling at The Glen, it’s a good idea to brush up on local driving rules to avoid any problems during your trip. Here’s a quick guide to help you drive safely and legally around Watkins Glen.

Which side to drive on

Like the rest of the United States, New York drivers stay on the right-hand side of the road.

Speed limits

Speed limits in New York depend on the type of road:

  • Residential streets: 25–30 mph
  • State highways: 55–65 mph
  • Interstates: Up to 70 mph in some areas

Always follow posted speed limit signs and adjust your speed if the weather is poor or traffic is heavy, especially on race weekend.

Traffic lights and signs

New York drivers must obey all traffic signals and road signs. Right turns on red are allowed after a full stop, unless a sign says “No Turn on Red.” When turning, yield to pedestrians and any oncoming or cross traffic.

Drinking and driving

New York enforces tough DUI laws. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and older, and zero tolerance applies for drivers under 21. Getting caught driving under the influence can lead to large fines, license suspension, or even jail.

Seat belt laws

Seat belts are required by law for all passengers, no matter where they sit in the vehicle. Police strictly enforce this rule, and violations can result in a fine.

Right of way

Drivers must yield to:

  • Pedestrians in crosswalks
  • Vehicles already in the intersection or those arriving first at an uncontrolled intersection
  • Emergency vehicles with lights or sirens

Be especially alert around Watkins Glen during race weekend – there’s a lot more foot traffic near the speedway.

If the Police in New York pull you over

  • Pull over safely using your turn signal. Move to the right and stop in a safe, preferably well-lit area.
  • Stay in the vehicle with your seat belt on. Keep your hands on the wheel and avoid sudden movements. If it’s nighttime, turn on your interior light.
  • Wait for instructions before reaching for your license, registration, or insurance.
  • Be respectful and cooperative. If you’re issued a ticket, calmly sign it – this isn’t an admission of guilt, just confirmation you received it.
  • Know your rights. You have the right to ask if you're free to go. You’re not required to answer further questions beyond providing your documents.
  • Make a record. If anything feels off, note the officer’s name, badge number, and patrol car info. You can file a complaint later through official channels.
